Pearl GTL Contract is a GEM for KVA

Aberdeen-based generator specialist KVA Limited has secured a contract to provide diesel generators for the two Pearl GTL Platforms offshore in Qatar.

The deal involves the design, testing and commissioning of seven project-specific diesel generator sets. Three will be installed on each of the two platforms, while a spare unit will be available for standby.

Sponsored by Qatar Petroleum and Shell, Pearl GTL comprises the development of upstream gas production facilities as well as an onshore GTL plant that will produce 140,000 barrels per day of high quality GTL fuels and products along with 120,000 bpd of condensate, liquefied petroleum gas and ethane. Pearl GTL is not only the world’s largest integrated GTL project, but also the largest energy project ever launched within the borders of Qatar.

KVA predicts that contract will contribute to its turnover rising from £4million in 2007 to approximately £7.5million in 2008.

KVA managing director Jeff King said: “Our Project Team has a fantastic track record with this type of generator, we delivered three similar units to Chevron for use on the Erskine Platform in the North Sea which, have now been in operation for several years. While similar to the Erskine Units these Pearl units will be unique in respect of the specific design elements requested by Shell”.

The Qatar contract was awarded to KVA by J. Ray McDermott’s Middle East operations, which is engineering, constructing and installing the Pearl GTL Platforms. Three units are due to be delivered mid 2008 with the remaining four later in the Year.

The platforms will not be manned for the majority of the time, and as such the generators must be extremely reliable and require minimum maintenance. These will be designed to operate for 2500 hours between service intervals and will feature remotely controlled systems that allow their status to be checked from a monitoring centre 70km away.

KVA specialise in the Hire, Sales & Service of Diesel Generators, providing the “The Complete Service”. The Company is now 10 Years Old and has extensive experience in the North Sea, North & West Africa, Central Asia and the Far East. Today in Project News we feature a news article for General Electric who have contracted to supply Diesel Gensets for Petrofac in a Kuwaiti Oil Project.   For full press article please read on:

GE Provides Diesel Gensets for Kuwaiti Oil Project

Transportation’s stationary power business announced it is supplying Petrofac International, Ltd., Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, with five diesel generator sets that will provide standby power for a Kuwait Oil Company gathering center.

The first units are being installed this month with operation to follow in late 2007. These engines mark an expansion for GE – Transportation into the oil and gas market in the Middle East for its diesel gensets.

“These rugged gensets are designed with customer requirements in mind, such as operation in the harsh desert environment where many oil and gas fields are situated,” said John Manison, manager of GE Marine & Stationary Power. “GE – Transportation’s stationary power generation solutions are a product of our experience as a leader in medium-speed engine design and manufacture, to provide efficient, cost-effective service in some of the world’s harshest operating environments.”

The diesel engines were manufactured at GE’s engine facility in Grove City, Pa. The four GE 12V228 diesel gensets, each rated at 2 megawatts continuous, and one GE 16V228 genset, rated at 2.5 megawatts continuous, will be used as part of a major $750 million upgrade project at a Kuwait Oil Company gathering center.

GE now offers its new V250 engine series, which provides increased power output, reliability, fuel-efficiency, and compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier II emissions standards. In marine and stationary power applications, the new 250-millimeter bore, 12 cylinder engine produces 4265 continuous horsepower (hp)/3180 kilowatts (kW). The 16V250 engine produces 5685 continuous hp/4239 kW. GE also offers a V228 engine designed for the most demanding applications.

GE Transportation’s diesel family of medium speed engines includes 8, 12 and 16 cylinder V configurations ranging between 1,400 to 5,682 horsepower for both commercial marine and industrial applications.

Aggreko News – Aggreko powers construction of copper mine in Chile

Another key story featured today is from the generator giant Aggreko.  This press release regards them supply of a 5MW power package to the largest copper mining company CODELCO for use in the Gaby Mine, Northern Chile.  For the full article please read on: Aggreko powers construction of copper mine in Chile

Aggreko, world leader in the provision of temporary power and temperature control services, and Corporación Chilena del Cobre (CODELCO), the world’s biggest copper producer, have signed a 17-month contract for the supply of a 5MW power package for the construction of Gaby mine in northern Chile.

State-owned CODELCO, which produced 11 per cent of the world’s copper in 2005, selected Aggreko after an intense bidding process, primarily due to the company’s ability to commit to plant installation within two months

The location of Gaby mine makes power security an important concern; the mine is very isolated and reliable power supply is central to the success of the project. After an evaluation of the various contenders, CODELCO awarded the contract to Aggreko because the company clearly understood the specific requirements of the project. Crucially Aggreko were able to agree to a two-month plant installation deadline.

Pablo Varela, Aggreko’s country Manager for Chile, confirmed “Timing was crucial and we managed to start providing energy within 10 days of receiving the letter of intent, enabling CODELCO to maintain operations and camp construction. Aggreko were also preferred as we were able to develop a solution specific to the project’s requirements; working very closely with CODELCO engineers to guarantee a safe and efficient operation. Health, safety and environment issues are among the top concerns of a mining operation and we ensured our compliance with mining regulations,”. The Aggreko temporary power plant, located 2,700mts above sea level, runs around-the-clock to sustain continuous construction. The site is managed throughout by a dedicated team of service engineers.

A worldwide operation, Aggreko, over the years, has served the needs of diverse industries, occasionally supplying vital power to projects in some of the most inhospitable regions on the planet. “Our extensive experience and proven record of reliable service, combined with our ability to provide rapid turnkey solutions, is what motivates companies and governments to work with us. We are very pleased to be able to work with CODELCO on a project of this magnitude, that will undoubtedly have a future impact on the Chilean economy,” Pablo Varela added.
