Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has been awarded a 26 million Euro contract by EBTE, the Alupar company responsible for the construction and development of the electric power infrastructure in the Brazil state of Mato Grosso, to supply AAAC (All Aluminium Alloy Conductor) for the construction of five new 230 kV overhead transmission lines with a total length of 775 km.

ABB wins $95-million order for power substations in Saudi Arabia

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth $95 million from the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), Saudi Arabia’s national power transmission utility, for substations to help strengthen the country’s distribution network. ABB will provide turnkey solutions for five new substations to increase the capacity of the Saudi Arabian distribution grid and help meet the needs of the growing economy in the region. The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2008 and the projects are scheduled for completion in 2011.

Madem Reels Group Celebrates 60th Anniversary in March 2009

Madem SA, founded in 1949, started small with 25 employees in an area of 800 m2 (8.600 sf) in the city of Bento Goncalves, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Madem’s first products were wooden barrels for wine and food. In 1970 Madem launched an exporting operation. Two years later Madem underwent a major product diversification: the manufacture of their first wooden cable reels that would ultimately turn the company into what it is today, the largest wooden cable reel manufacturer in the world.

Today, Madem owns 12,000 hectares (30.000 acres) of Pine forests, two lumber mills, one plywood plant, and many state-of-the-art automated reel manufacturing lines. Madem is one of Brazil’s largest forestry groups, with manufacturing operations in the USA, Spain, Romania, and Bahrain. Venture Tape Corp. to Acquire Compac Corp.s Pressure Sensitive Adhesives Assets

Venture Tape Corp., a subsidiary of 3M, announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Compac Corp.’s pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape assets from Lamtec Corp. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Compac, a subsidiary of TriMas Corporation, which recently agreed to sell Compac to Lamtec, is a global provider of pressure sensitive adhesive tapes primarily for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), insulation and industrial markets. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2009. Upon completion of this transaction, all Compac PSA tape products will be supplied from Venture Tape Corp.

Break in fiber optic cable disrupts Internet, phone service in Berks

A break in a major fiber optic cable owned by Frontier Communications disrupted telephone and high speed Internet service to about 13,000 customers Tuesday afternoon in Berks County, officials said. The break occurred about 1 between Reading and Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County, according to Berks County Emergency Management officials. Service was restored to all customers by 5 p.m., a Frontier spokeswoman reported.
