Shell to Make Hydrowax Investment at Dutch Facility

Shell Nederland Chemie B.V. on Monday said it is making a significant investment to strengthen the integration of the Pernis-Moerdijk refinery and chemicals complex in The Netherlands. The investment forms part of an ongoing program to secure the long-term potential and competitiveness of Shell chemical assets in Western Europe and will concentrate on supplying hydrowax from the Pernis refinery, and other Shell chemical refineries in Europe, to Moerdijk to create an advantaged feedstock position.

The project will focus on the modification of a number of furnaces at Moerdijk to crack hydrowax and modifications to the associated logistics infrastructure at Pernis and Moerdijk. Hydrowax, a by-product from refining hydrocrackers is available from the Pernis refinery and can offer significant economic advantages compared to conventional ethylene feedstocks. The project is expected to be complete and onstream during the first quarter of 2009.

Graham van’t Hoff, VP Base Chemicals Europe, said: “The investment announced today is key to ensuring Pernis-Moerdijk maintains its position as one of the most competitive petrochemical complexes in Europe. By securing advantaged feedstock we maximize the oil chemicals advantage between the two sites and pave the way for further integration. It’s about taking a long-term view and being proactive in providing the best possible platform for business sustainability.”

Monday’s announcement is the latest in a broader program for Shell chemicals companies in Europe designed to boost the integrity and efficiency of derivative production units and build capacity additions. The program includes an expansion of the Pernis IPA (isopropyl alcohol) plant, reinforcing Shell’s leading global position in IPA and a recently announced investment to increase flexible polyol capacity at Pernis to meet growing demand for slabstock foam, CASE (coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers) and molding applications.

Shell Chemicals manufacture and deliver petrochemical building blocks to industrial customers. These products are widely used in plastics, coatings and detergents.

Oeyvind Mikaelsen, Vice President Acergy Northern Europe and Canada, said, “We welcome the award of another deepwater construction contract for Hydro for additional work on the Ormen Lange field which follows the installation of the export trunkline in 2006 and the MEG line work completed earlier this year.”

Northwire expands DataCELL® FIELD

Northwire, Inc. has expanded its DataCELL FIELD rugged cable product line to include a CC-Link, high-flex-life mid ODVA™ DeviceNet™ as well as new nominal 100 Ω and 80 Ω FOUNDATION fieldbus® cables.

The DataCELL FIELD CC-Link cables are available as standard network cable and network cable with a power pair. The CC-Link cables are constructed to comply with CC-Link-dedicated cable specifications (Ver. 1.10). They are conformance tested and passed by CLPA (CC-Link Partner Association), UL-listed PLTC, CSA-approved CMX-Outdoor-CMG. Available with the industry standard red outer jacket or in other colors, the cable is fully shielded with a 65 percent tinned copper braid and inner 100 percent foil shield with drain.

The high-flex-life DataCELL FIELD mid ODVA DeviceNet cables are for discrete factory automation and control. They have been tested to survive more than 10 million cycles on Northwire’s flex testing equipment. Other ODVA DeviceNet cables from Northwire include ODVA-compliant thick (600V-rated); thin (300V-rated); and special PLTC (Power Limited Tray Cable) thin, designed with 22 AWG data pair and PLTC-rated. High-flex-life DataCELL FIELD mid ODVA DeviceNet cables are available in standard and custom colors, and feature a TPE jacket that is resistant to abrasion, oil, light and water. This cable is an excellent choice for installation in cable tracks.

The expanded DataCELL FOUNDATION fieldbus cable line includes new versions with controlled electrical characteristics–now a choice of nominal 100 Ω or 80 Ω; new 16 AWG versions; and multipair versions including 1, 2, 4, 8, 10 and 12-pair cables in 18 and 16 AWG. It is the only FOUNDATION fieldbus cable that is UL-listed ITC/PLTC-ER (instrument tray cable/power-limited tray cable exposed-run listed). DataCELL FOUNDATION fieldbus cable complies with FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 specification for type A and is approved for use in Classes 1 and 2, Div. 2 hazardous areas.
Northwire’s complete line of DataCELL FIELD rugged cables for discrete factory automation include DeviceNet, PROFIBUS® DP, AS-interface, CC-Link and CANopen.
