Tuesday, Nov 10, 2009
Prysmian has presented its development plans for Brazil during the Business Mission to Brazil organised by the Italian government, Confindustria (Italian confederation of industry), ICE (Italian foreign trade board) and ABI (Italian banking association). The Group will have invested some $180 million in Brazil over the period 2009–2010, which, combined with investments made in 2007-2008, takes the total to around $270 million in the past few years, in this strategic country for the Group’s worldwide growth. In the wake of the crisis-driven downturn in 2009, the objective is to increase sales in South America by around 25% in the period 2010-2011. The Group is particularly anticipating this business recovery on the basis of the effects of the growth-acceleration plan (PAC) launched by the Brazilian government for new infrastructure development and on its entry into the flexible pipes market for offshore oil extraction, thanks to its partnership with Petrobras.

“The agreement with Petrobras – explains Prysmian CEO Valerio Battista – represents a major step forward for Prysmian in expanding its business in the Oil Gas & Petrochemicals industry, confirming the Group’s strategic commitment to investing in value-added, high-tech businesses requiring specialist know-how.”

The strategic sectors on which the Group is focusing in Brazil are medium and high voltage electric cables, cables for the construction sector, optical fibre cables for telecommunications, and special cables for various specific industries. Prysmian’s investments in Brazil are aimed at diversifying and further expanding its activities in the market of technology and products for the Oil Gas & Petrochemicals industry. After investing some $45 million in 2007 in building a new plant for umbilical cables (that connect offshore wells to drilling platforms), the Group plans to start producing flexible pipes in 2010. For the purposes of expanding into this new market, Prysmian will have invested around $125 million in building the new manufacturing facilities (against an initial budget of $110 million) as well as spent some $40 million on R&D. The new plant in Vila Velha will join the existing umbilicals facility in Vila Velha and will employ 100 people.

For its entry into the high-tech, specialist sector of flexible pipes, Prysmian can rely on its strategic partnership with the Brazilian oil major of Petrobras. In fact, Prysmian has signed a four-year frame agreement with Petrobras for the design and supply of flexible pipes. The initial value of material supplied under this agreement is $135 million. Other important orders will be placed under this agreement over the four-year period. In detail, Prysmian will supply a wide range of dynamic risers (flexible pipes and conduits that link subsea oil fields to drilling platforms or ships) and static flowlines (flexible pipes and conduits that link up the various components of subsea extraction systems), which can be installed in depths of over 2,000 metres.

Prysmian will develop this new range of flexible pipes under a series of Technical Cooperation Agreements with Petrobras. The first prototype flexible pipes, produced with machinery already installed in the existing Vila Velha plant, were recently presented at the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, attended by the world’s major oil industry players. The addition of flexible pipes to its current production of umbilicals will enable Prysmian to offer the OG&P industry a comprehensive range of SURF products (Subsea Umbilicals, Risers and Flowlines).

Present in Brazil since 1929 as Pirelli Cavi e Sistemi, the Prysmian Group is now one of the largest Italian industrial concerns in Brazil, active in all the more strategic businesses of the energy and telecommunication cables and systems sector, from high and extra high voltage systems to high-tech cables for the oil industry and optical cables for telecommunications. With six plants and one R&D centre, Prysmian has more than one thousand employees in Brazil. Over the years the Group has forged important partnerships with the country’s foremost industrial players, such as the oil major Petrobras, large utilities such as Eletronorte and Eletropaulo, telecom operators like Telefonica, and construction and industrial groups like Siemens, Yazaki and Alstom.

Prysmian
A leading player in the industry of high-technology cables and systems for energy and telecommunication, the Prysmian Group is a truly global company with sales exceeding Euro 5 billion in 2008 and a strong position in higher value-added market segments. With its two businesses, Energy Cables & Systems (submarine and underground cables for power transmission and distribution, for industrial applications and for the distribution of electricity to residential and commercial buildings) and Telecom Cables & Systems (optical cables and fibres and copper cables for video, data and voice transmission), Prysmian boasts a global presence with subsidiaries in 38 countries, 53 plants in 21 countries, 7 Research & Development Centres in Europe, USA and South America, and over 12,000 employees. Specialising in the development of products and systems designed to meet specific client requirements, Prysmian’s key strengths include: a focus on Research & Development, the capacity to innovate products and production processes, and the use of advanced proprietary technologies. Prysmian is listed on the Milan Stock Exchange in the Blue Chip index.

Monday, Nov 09, 2009
Draka Cableteq USA, manufacturer of wire and cable products since 1905, announced today that it has received a $3.2 million grant from the United States Department of Energy to support the development of a new generation of tools that will allow Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) to supply the United States with much clean, carbon-neutral electrical power.

EGS uses water injected deep into the earth to generate steam to run electrical turbines. One EGS power plant has the potential to generate power equivalent to more than 40 wind turbines or a coal-fired plant. The DOE has set a goal of generating 20% of the US electrical power by 2010 via geothermal sources. It is anticipated that this will be accomplished by establishing EGS plants in as many as 20 states.

Under the EGS award program, Draka will develop and bring to market high temperature 374°C (705°F) hydrogen-insensitive fiber optic cable for distributed temperature and pressure sensing throughout the wellbore and high temperature electrical cable for running pumps, sensors and tools deep inside the well. Insulated wire and glass fiber cables are a crucial enabling technology for EGS. Without wire and fiber, downhole tools such as temperature and pressure sensors cannot communicate with the surface. However, high temperatures and formation of hydrogen within the well makes the use of insulated conductors problematic and also results in the rapid degradation of glass fiber. There is currently no cable that can operate in a well hotter than 300°C for a period greater than a few days.

Mark Lowell PhD, Draka’s Vice President of Innovation and Principal Investigator for the Grant explains that “EGS depend on the ability to monitor conditions throughout the wellbore. Our hydrogen-insensitive optical fiber will provide a means for obtaining temperature and pressure measurement at thousands of points in the well.

We are extremely grateful for the assistance our partners in this project will provide, including Sandia National Laboratories, AltaRock Energy and PermaWorks. We are also exceedingly grateful to Congressmen Barney Frank and Patrick McHenry for their support for our proposal.”

Draka Cableteq USA, Inc. develops and manufactures high performance standard and specialty cables and has facilities in Taunton, Massachusetts and Schuylkill Haven, Pennsylvania. Draka Cableteq USA, Inc. is a member of the Draka family of wire and cable companies owned by Draka Holding N.V. based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has just commissioned the world’s first Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) that is installed in a power plant. In this pilot project for Vattenfall Europe Generation AG, the SFCL will provide short-circuit protection for the internal medium voltage power supply that feeds coal mills and crushers in the Boxberg brown coal power plant in Saxony, Germany.

Thanks to their almost instantaneous response to fault currents, SFCLs prevent the damaging overloading of switchgear and other power network components that can occur during short-circuits. Vattenfall´s experts anticipate that this innovative technology will offer significant benefits in personnel and plant safety and they are keen to gain practical experience on SFCL in collaboration with Nexans.

“When short-circuits occur, a SFCL can limit the current so quickly and effectively that the risk is significantly reduced,” states Dr. Thomas Krüger, project manager at Vattenfall. “It could also help cut costs significantly by reducing the need to oversize substation equipment and cables to withstand even the most extreme short-circuit currents. That’s why power plant operators have taken such a strong interest in SFCL technology, since they both improve safety and cut overall investment costs”.

“This is the second complete SFCL system that Nexans has supplied, and the first time that this type of device has ever been used in a power plant, which is a highly challenging environment from a technological point of view,” says Dr. Joachim Bock, CEO of Nexans SuperConductors. “It is particularly important for us that the systems are being implemented without public grants, which is also unprecedented on the world stage”.

Live testing of the SFCL in a 12 kV power supply

Vattenfall’s SFCL, based on Nexans´ HTS (high temperature superconductor) technology and designed for a rated current of 800 A, is undergoing live testing by daily routine operation in a feeder bar of the 12 kV power supply for rebound hammer mills (used for crushing coal).

For the SFCL used in Boxberg, Nexans SuperConductors designed and built the device according to the specifications from Vattenfall and the Brandenburg Technical University in Cottbus (Germany), which is providing scientific support for this project.

The device can limit a 63 kA prospective short circuit current to less than 30 kA and to about 7 kA after 10 milliseconds.

Wednesday, Nov 04, 2009
ADC (NASDAQ: ADCT) (www.adc.com), a leading supplier of infrastructure solutions for fiber deployments, announced today its OmniReach® Hub-in-a-Pedestal (HIP) fiber distribution hub, OmniReach Passive Optical Splitter Modules, Fiber Cable Assemblies and Value-added Module VAM system have been accepted by the USDA Rural Development Telecommunications program, allowing ADC`s products to be used in the expansion of broadband services to underserved and rural communities.

ADC now offers hundreds of Rural Utilities Service (RUS)-listed products to carriers serving rural areas in the United States and seeking funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. Acceptance by the USDA Rural Development Telecommunications Program of ADC solutions enables service providers seeking funding from the RUS to propose the use of these products in applications they submit for the agency`s loans and grants.

“The USDA Rural Development program is helping rural carriers invest in
broadband infrastructure to deliver a growing number of broadband services to rural customers,” said Jaxon Lang, vice president of Global Connectivity Solutions – Americas for ADC. “The acceptance of additional ADC products helps our FTTX customers offer new broadband services cost effectively in the rural communities they serve. With new networks in place, carriers can not only deliver services but new revenue streams as well.”

ADC`s history as a FTTX solution provider began in 2003, with one of its first OmniReach FTTX fiber deployments for rural applications in Windom, Minn. in 2005. Since then hundreds of rural carriers and municipalities have selected ADC FTTX solutions to provide broadband services to their subscribers.

Expanded Portfolio of RUS-Listed ADC Products Fiber is the critical enabler of the advances needed in today`s rural networks, and ADC has a comprehensive portfolio of fiber-based solutions accepted by the
USDA RuralDevelopment Telecommunications Program. The company`s newest FTTX additions to the RUS listing include:

* OmniReach Hub-in-a-Pedestal (HIP) – Modeled after ADC`s industry-leading FDH 3000, the Hub-in-a-Pedestal is right-sized for rural landscapes numbering in size from 12 to 96 homes. Additionally, this field-friendly unit is enclosed in a pedestal rather than in a metal cabinet and can be placed in the ground without pouring a concrete pad or installing a hand hole. This feature speeds deployment of fiber to the home and reduces overall project costs.
* OmniReach Passive Optical Splitter Modules – These splitter modules, which are installed in an outside plant enclosure, enable carriers to split optical signals to multiple homes and businesses. Combined with superior cable management, these products reduce the time to route fiber in cabinets and save operating costs. They also can be adapted to a wide variety of applications for the central office as well as the outside plant.
* Fiber Cable Assemblies – ADC offers a wide variety of fiber cable assemblies and accessories designed to meet the requirements of today`s high-speed networks. These products include patch cords, multi-fiber assemblies and connectors, adapters and attenuators.
* Value-added Module (VAM) System – This solution adds flexibility and
functionality to the optical transport system by enabling carriers to easily
incorporate optical components into the network. This versatile platform
consists of various chassis and optical components that fit into all existing ADC optical distribution frames and various other mounting environments.

Other ADC products on the RUS list include nearly all the company`s fiber
portfolio, including ADC`s FiberGuide® Fiber Management Systems, Next-Generation Frames (NGFs), OmniReach® Fiber Access Terminals (FATs) and Fiber Distribution Hubs (FDHs), as well as OmniReach Multiport Service Terminals (MSTs) and fiber hardened drop cables.

ADC – A Broadband Stimulus Resource for Rural Carriers and Municipalities
In addition to its comprehensive product portfolio, ADC is offering carriers and municipalities educational information to support its current customers and prospects as they seek stimulus funding.

In September 2008 one of the most modern multipurpose arenas in Europe opened – O2 World in Berlin. The safety systems for the facility are powered using proven extended-integrity cabling and components by Daetwyler Cables.

With an area of 60,000 square metres and seating and standing capacity for 17,000 guests, O2 World in Berlin is the largest event arena in the German capital. In addition to concerts, the multifunctional arena is used mainly for sporting events, including home games of the Eisbären Berlin (ice hockey) and ALBA Berlin (basketball). Developer and financier of O2 World is the Anschutz Entertainment Group, which operates and markets stadiums, arenas, and theatres worldwide. .

Large public facilities such as this must meet extremely high safety standards. Fire-protection systems play a central role, and at O2 World these were designed and installed by the engineering office hhpberlin. The emergency power supply is provided by a high-capacity battery array and two large diesel generators in parallel. Together, these supply the emergency lighting, elevators, air expulsion, and smoke extraction systems. To ensure that the safety systems will function reliably in the case of fire, they are powered using tested extended-integrity cables by Daetwyler Cables (E30, E90). .

Two companies handled installation of the safety cabling: Wahlen & Schabbach Elektroinstallations GmbH in Weiskirchen and Elektro Volkmann in Zehdenick. Between October 2007 and July 2008 these two contractors installed some 40 kilometres of ceramic-insulated cable from Daetwyler Cables’ Pyrosys line. .

During this phase Wahlen & Schabbach alone used 35 kilometres of Pyrofil safety cable for power supply for the emergency lighting system, fire-alarm systems, sprinklers, and extinguishing-water system. Nearly 3,000 Hermann clamps were used, as well as numerous SAS single clamps, Type B strap clamps, and special plugs that were also tested for extended integrity. The site manager reports that “the ceramic-insulated material is easy to work with on site. A great advantage of Pyrosys is that it allows much longer distances between fixtures than standard cable”. .

“We’ve been in the market for nearly 40 years and our reliable performance has earned us a good reputation amongst our customers,” explains the procurement head at Wahlen & Schabbach. “According to our policy to use brand-name products only, Daetwyler Cables has been our first choice for safety cabling since the eighties because the company is both the market leader and the innovation leader in this field. And Daetwyler Cables has always been very consistent.” In this project it was proved once again that “Daetwyler Cables is a strong partner. That includes quality of the materials, comprehensive test certificates, availability and prompt delivery, and competent people who know what they’re talking about – exactly what we need to perform well on site.

In this competition, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy 20 teams of college and university students compete to design, build and operate the most attractive, effective and energy-efficient solar-powered house.

HELUKABEL® supported Team Germany by providing its SOLARFLEX®-X PV1-F – a cable with VDE and TÜV approval that is especially developed for the use in photovoltaic systems. The cable is characterized by an extreme robust and abrasion resistant jacket material (required if the cable rubs against the substructure in high winds) as well as an excellent UV , ozone-, weather- and hydrolyses resistance.

Marc Luksch, Director of HELUKABEL® USA, comments: “We are so proud having been part of this team. For more than 15 years HELUKABEL® has been conducting continuous research to develop products for renewable energies and to make a contribution to an environmentally friendly generation of energy”.

The winner’s “Cube House”, which was covered by shiny, black solar panels on every available surface, produced a surplus of electricity even during three days of straight rain throughout the two-week long contest. Team Germany was the only team to earn the full points in this competition category. The extra energy the house produced was pumped into the energy grid of a Washington-area power company.
