General Cable expanding Malvern plant

General Cable plans to invest over $12 million in its Malvern plant this year 

The funds will be used to expand the facility, purchase new equipment and train associates on how to manufacture bare aluminum transmission products more efficiently. Work is already in progress.

ExxonMobil Chemicals specialty elastomers improve flexibility ease processing of wire and cable compounds

ExxonMobil Chemical will present its broad portfolio of specialty elastomers for wire and cable applications at Chinaplas 2008 Hall W2 W2B31. Vistalon™ EPDM* rubber, Exact™ plastomers and Santoprene™ thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) can improve flexibility in polyolefin-based compositions. In addition, these specialty elastomers are cost competitive and all are available in pellet form for easier processing. They are all compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directives, and a wide range of the grades are Underwriters Laboratories (UL) approved

PRYSMIAN AWARDED US$18 MILLION STEEL TUBE “UMBILICAL” CONTRACT BY PETROBRAS BRAZIL

Milan, 27 March 2008 – Prysmian Cables & Systems, a world leading company in the Power and Telecommunication Cables and Systems industry, has been awarded a US$ 18m contract by Brazilian company Petrobras (Petróleo Brasileiro SA) for 35km of static and dynamic Steel Tube Umbilicals to be installed in a number of fields in the Santos, Campos and Espirito Santo Basins, located offshore to the Brazilian coastline. Umbilicals are multifunctional tubing systems which enable sub sea wellheads and manifolds to be connected to platforms or FPSO’s (Floating Production Storage and Offloading). Prysmian designs and produces these products and solutions at its industrial facility in Vila Velha, Brazil.

KEMA is authorized for PAH testing

The German Committee for Commercial Equipment and Consumer Products (ATAV) has now made testing for polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) obligatory for the GS (Geprüfte Sicherheit) safety testing product certification. As ofApril 1, 2008, the PAH test, which was previously a voluntary test will become a standard requirement for GS certification of all new products. This applies to electrical products intended for use in households and in the workplace.

Alcatel-Lucent awards submarine network installation contract to DeepOcean subsidiary

CTC Marine Projects (a DeepOcean ASA subsidiary, OSE:DEEP) has been awarded a submarine network installation contract by Alcatel-Lucent. The contract will be for an initial period of 6 months starting in June 2008, with options to extend for a further 6 months.

CTC will employ a comprehensive Telecoms installation spread for the work, using the Maersk Responder vessel and the company’s MD3 cable plough. CTC’s Telecoms General Manager, Paul Woodward, commented:

We are delighted to be working with Alcatel-Lucent on this project. It re-establishes CTC’s strength in submarine telecoms and will help to position the company as a major supplier of marine installation services to the market.

Corning Cable Systems LLC, part of Corning Incorporated’s (NYSE:GLW) Telecommunications segment, is featuring its Plug and Play™ AnyLAN™ Systems at the 2008 BICSI Winter Conference in Orlando, Fla. The all-encompassing preterminated fiber optic cabling solution can be deployed in both inside and outside plant local area network (LAN) applications.
Plug & Play AnyLAN Systems feature a multimode or single-mode optical cable pre-installed with network access points at customer-specified intervals and a tethered, environmentally hardened MT connector. Once distance measurements for network access point locations are obtained, the preterminated system is manufactured and tested. The entire system is then packaged and shipped to the customer on a cable reel for immediate deployment in the desired indoor or outdoor application.
